Via San Gregorio Armeno is one of the most recognizable streets in Naples, in the historic center, and it connects the Decumani area with Via dei Tribunali in just a few steps. It is almost always crossed on foot, amid a steady flow of visitors. Here, the work of nativity scene workshops is concentrated in every season: a narrow street with shop windows, workshops, and small stalls full of figures in terracotta, cork, wood, and fabric. The street takes its name from the ancient monastic complex of San Gregorio Armeno, not far away, and retains a strong link with Naples’ artisan tradition. As you walk, you often see the nativity scene masters at work: they shape faces, paint tiny details, and dress Nativity figures and scenes from contemporary life. The atmosphere is lively in every month, but becomes more intense in autumn and winter, when decorations increase and the workshops display new pieces. Around it stand historic palaces, narrow facades, low balconies, and entrances that suddenly open between one workshop and the next. Here you can find small souvenirs and complete nativity scenes, often made to measure.
