At the fourth mile from Benevento (about 6 km) lies the settlement of Nuceriola. It was a settlement of about 14 hectares, founded in the Samnite period (4th century BC) and surviving until the Early Middle Ages. Nuceriola played an important role in resource management and in controlling traffic, and it served as a stopping point along the Appian Way. Today nothing is visible, but archaeological excavations have brought to light a stretch of the Samnite fortification in tuff blocks and a Roman-period craft complex (visible in the 3D model), dedicated to the production of thin-walled pottery. The investigations also identified a stretch of the Appian Way, almost completely destroyed by plowing.
