As we approach the city, on the roadside, the concrete core of what must have been a mausoleum in the shape of a truncated pyramid is visible. This funerary monument was part of the Roman necropolis that lined the Appian Way. Together with other funerary buildings, it must have characterized the ancient landscape outside the city. At present, the monument is topped by a crucifix and a stone block in which a skull is carved, a symbol of Golgotha. Popular devotion has decidedly changed the function of this structure.
