The Masseria in the Cancelleria district was a fundamental node of the papal customs system as early as the late 11th century. This was because, until the Unification of Italy, Benevento was included among the papal possessions. The long life of this building is testified by the main façade, which shows phases and expansions from different periods. Some ancient artifacts are also reused here, presumably coming from the surrounding areas, including a milestone and a funerary inscription dating to around the 1st century AD.
