The cellar of the Abbey of Novacella is one of the oldest in the world
At the Abbey of Novacella, there was a cellar as early as 1142: it is therefore one of the oldest still active cellars in the world and is today one of the most important in the Isarco Valley, a jewel of a territory that produces white wines of the highest quality.
The assortment mainly offers white wines, but not only. "70% consists of Sylvaner, Müller Thurgau, Kerner, and Riesling" - explains Celestino Lucin. The caution and prudence he imposes apply not only in the cellar but also in many other areas. By respecting these rules, the winemakers cultivate in a sustainable manner - the cellar even operates with zero CO2 emissions.
Although the cellar of the Abbey of Novacella is mainly known for its white wines, 30% of the production is represented by red wines, which play a significant role. The grapes are harvested from vineyards owned by the Abbey, located in Bressanone and surrounding areas. "For their cultivation, the climatic conditions are not optimal" - explains Celestino Lucin confidently. For this reason, the grapes of Schiava, Pinot Noir, and Moscato Rosa are harvested in the areas of Bolzano and Cornaiano.
But whether it is white or red wines, the flagship of the cellar of the Abbey of Novacella remains the Praepositus line, which is also a tribute to the founder. Praepositus, in Latin, means bishop, shepherd of souls, referring to Blessed Hartmann, then bishop of Bressanone and founder of the Abbey.
